Green Split Pea Curry | Sri Lankan way!

I was intrigued to make a curry out of these Green Split Peas as soon as I saw them at Woolworths. So I bought a packet for AU$2.90 and decided to give it a go. I used a traditional Sri Lankan Dhal (Lentil) curry recipe for this.

However, I did make the mistake of not soaking the peas overnight. Which is a crucial step to do as the peas are harder than regular lentils. Here is the recipe and a instruction video on how to make it.

Serve 8

Ingredients

Green Split Peas 1 1/2 cups (Soaked Overnight)

Coconut Cream/ Milk 1/2 cups

Water 2 cups ( You will need 5 cups if you don't soak peas over night)

Chili Powder 1 tsp

Sri Lankan Curry Powder 2 1/2 tsp

Turmeric Powder 2/3 tsp

Onion, roughly chopped 1/2 of a small onion

Garlic, cut into slices 1 clove

Curry Leaves 4-6 leaves (Dry or Fresh)

Red Chili Pepper 2

Salt 2 tsp or to taste

Method

1. Wash Green Split Peas twice and soak overnight to soften.

2. Add all the ingredients except for salt and coconut milk into a saucepan.

3. Cook on the stove on a medium - low heat until the peas are soft and porridge like. Taste to check if the peas are cooked all the way and does not taste raw. It will take about 15-20 minutes. However, keep an eye on it as the bottom might get over cooked.

4. After peas are cooked add coconut milk and salt. Mix well using a spoon. Taste to check if all the spices and seasoning is at the correct levels.

5. Leave another 2-3 minutes until the curry boils and then turn off the stove.

6. Your Green Split Pea Curry is now ready. Serve with rice, roti, bread or mix into soup stock and enjoy as a soup.
